The Boland House Update 5-21-2023

During the past two weeks, we had meetings with subcontractors including HVAC, plumbing, roofing, electrical, and framing.  We emphasized the importance of preserving the historical features of the house throughout the renovation process.

One significant challenge we addressed is the narrow, steep staircase from the entrance foyer to the second floor.  To make this important access consistent with today’s standards, we are rebuilding the existing flight to widen, reduce the pitch and increase the railing height.  Adding an intermediate landing and a short second flight at a right angle makes this necessary modification fit in the footprint of the existing foyer and thereby save the original walls.

Full bathrooms are also being installed in each of the two upstairs bedrooms.  Once again they have been configured to facilitate maintaining the existing walls and windows while concealing the plumbing and electrical requirements.

By carefully planning and coordinating with these craft experts, we are confident that we can modernize the house infrastructure while maintaining a significant amount of its historical appearance.  We are excited about the progress being made so far and look forward to sharing more updates as our restoration journey continues.
