July 2023 update

We have had a relatively calm period with our framing contractor completing structural work in the kitchen, root cellar and the porches. The plumber has also finished roughing in the plumbing. The rest of July will bring a flurry of activity and progress.

The mason, roofer, HVAC, electrician and finishing carpenter will all be working on their portion of the project over the next several weeks.  With multiple trades set to commence their work, we anticipate a busy and productive period ahead. Each step brings us closer to the realization of our vision and the transformation of this historic home.

We are continuing our photo documentation of the various features of the property. For instance, work under the front porch exposed the old beam structure used to support it. Replacement and reinforcement of that structure was necessary, but we retained as much of the old elements as we could.

The old root cellar is another very interesting feature which provides foundation and storage under the west end of the two story portion of the house. It was dug into the ground but was also bricked up to the sill all around. The cellar provided cool storage for root vegetables such as onions, potatoes, turnips, etc. Vent holes were provided in the brick walls to allow some air movement.

Both under the porch and down in the root cellar, we see how a combination of larger hewn beams and smaller log beams with a flattened top sides were used in the 1840’s to provide structure and support for the floor above.  With the smaller log beams, in some cases spanning 18 feet, the floors above had some natural “spring” which is not allowed in todays building practice.  Where necessary, we have added some intermediate supports under the old beams to reduce the sensation of movement to which we are not accustomed in todays world.
We are excited to share this journey of exploration and restoration, and we will provide more insights and updates as we progress further in bringing The Boland House back to be used by todays community.
